The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2011 which Queen Elizabeth II will attend is scheduled to run from the 28th to the 30th of October in Perth, Western Australia. The Queen of Australia will also visit Canberra and Melbourne in Her visit to Australia. To settle a tedious argument, a journalist might do well to ask the Governor-General during this visit by the Queen whether she thinks she is in fact the Head of State for Australia, as some people – including monarchists – try to claim.
While an agenda does not seem apparent on the public website, ACM have indicated that one of the topics to be discussed and agreed upon is a change to the rules of succession for the divisible Crowns of the Commonwealth realms.
If this is in fact the case, CHOGM 2011 is likely to be a momentous event in Australia’s constitutional history, when seen with hindsight.
