Valley coal exports ‘justified’

Victoria will be ”doing the world a favour” if it exports dry brown coal to burn in developing countries’ power stations, according to the head of a company promising cleaner uses for Latrobe Valley coal.
Ignite Energy Resources executive director John White said the State Government would be justified in approving plans to sell dried brown coal offshore because it was more environmentally friendly when burnt than the black coal exported from NSW and Queensland…
Mr White said dried brown coal would have roughly the emissions of black coal but would produce less ash, heavy metals and sulphur.
Exporting brown coal was ”almost an obligation because it will be an improvement on what is going to be happening for many decades”, he said…
